Shopify's Product Taxonomy and Google Shopping: How They Connect

Shopify and Google each keep their own list of product categories, and the two are easy to confuse. This guide explains which field is which, how Shopify handles a Google Product Category you already have, and what Google does when you send nothing.

Two taxonomies, three fields

Shopify's Category field uses Shopify's Standard Product Taxonomy. Google uses its own list, submitted as the Google product category attribute. On top of those, both systems have a free-text product type that you define yourself.

Shopify's help center says the category helps when you sell on channels such as Facebook or Google that require standardized categories.

What Google does with a missing category

In Google's product data specification, the Google product category is optional. Google states that all products are automatically assigned a product category.

How Shopify maps a Google category you already use

If your products already carry a Google Product Category, Shopify can map it to its own taxonomy, but the match is strict. Shopify's help center says the mapping happens when the value matches a taxonomy value in English exactly, or when the ID is provided.

In a product CSV the two live in separate columns: Product Category for Shopify's taxonomy and Google Shopping / Google Product Category for Google's.

Attributes travel with the category

A category matters to Google because of what it requires next. Shopify's Google requirements page notes that apparel and accessories may need age group, gender, color and size, and that media and books need specific identifiers. Google's specification lists material and pattern as required when they distinguish products in a set of variants.

In Shopify, setting the Category is what makes category metafields such as color and material appear on the product, so the category is the practical starting point for this data.

A workable routine

Set the Shopify Category on every product, choosing the most specific match for the product's main function. Then check the Google Product Category in the Google & YouTube app's product fields for the products you advertise. Shopify also notes that checkout directly on Instagram or Facebook needs a Google Product Category for tax reasons, even if a Shopify category is set.

For background on the Category field itself, see Shopify product categories and taxonomy.

Doing this at scale

TaxonomyForge scans your catalog for missing categories, blank or generic product types and empty attributes. It proposes a Shopify Standard Product Taxonomy category with a confidence score, a clean product type, and attribute metafields from your own copy, and you approve each change one by one or in bulk. See TaxonomyForge.
