Extra revenue per month

$1,440

$864 recovered today vs $2,304 at the modelled rate — about 20 more recovered orders a month.

Why the number is usually big

Most carts never become orders — Baymard Institute's long-running research puts average documented cart abandonment around 70%. Recovery emails work on shoppers who already chose a product and reached checkout, which is why even a few recovered percent move real money.

What moves the recovery rate

Timing (the first email within an hour), a direct link back to the loaded cart, and answering the reason they left — shipping cost, total surprise, payment doubts. Discounts recover carts too, but train repeat visitors to abandon on purpose; try sequence and timing fixes first.

Frequently asked questions

What is a typical cart abandonment rate?

Baymard Institute, which aggregates published ecommerce studies, puts the average around 70% — and higher on mobile. If your Shopify abandoned-checkout list looks alarmingly long, it's probably normal; what varies between stores is how much of it gets recovered.

What's a realistic abandoned cart recovery rate?

Stores with no recovery flow recover almost nothing. A basic single email typically recovers a low single-digit percent of abandoned checkouts; well-timed multi-step sequences across email and SMS do better. Model a conservative and an optimistic rate in the calculator rather than trusting any single benchmark.

When should the first abandoned cart email go out?

Within the first hour, while the shopper still remembers the cart and the intent is warm. A common sequence is roughly one hour, one day and three days after abandonment, with the direct cart link in every message.

Should abandoned cart emails include a discount?

Not by default. A discount in the first email trains returning shoppers to abandon carts to farm coupons. Start with a plain reminder and the cart link; hold any discount for the last message, and consider limiting it to first-time customers.
