Selling in more than one language starts in your Shopify settings. Here's how to add a language, connect it to your markets, and publish it.
Add the language
Go to Settings, then Languages, and click Add language. Pick the language, click Next, and choose which domains or market subfolders it should appear on.
- Settings → Languages → Add language
- Pick a language → Next
- Choose domains or market subfolders
Connect it to your markets
Each published language gets its own URLs, like a subfolder for French in Canada. Set those up in Markets, so shoppers in each region land on the right language.
- Example: example.com/fr-ca
- Where: Settings → Markets
- Result: Shoppers land in their language
Translate, then publish
Translate your content first, then publish the language from its menu in Languages. Most plans allow up to 20 languages, and Shopify Plus allows 30. Once it's published, checkout and email notifications switch to the customer's language too.
- Publish: Languages → menu → Publish
- Limit: 20 languages, 30 on Plus
- Bonus: Checkout + emails switch language
Doing this at scale
LinguaFlow drafts translations for each language you add, lets you review them before publishing, and publishes through Shopify's Translations API with no theme edits. See LinguaFlow.
