Your Shopify Payments payouts are paused or on hold, and the money isn't reaching your bank. Holds are specific to each account, so the first job is finding your reason. Here's what causes it and how to fix it.
What a hold does
A hold means you can't receive payouts until the reason is resolved. Customers can usually still check out, but you won't be paid out for those orders until then. In some cases, the store can't accept new orders. Only the store owner can see the account details and resolve it.
- Payouts: Stopped until the reason is resolved
- Checkout: Usually still works
- Who: Only the store owner can resolve it
Why holds happen
Shopify lists the reasons holds happen. It needs more information to verify your business. Your bank details are wrong. A product isn't eligible, or your business type isn't supported. Less often, sanctions, or a creditor's legal action.
- Verification: Information needed about your business
- Bank: Incorrect bank account details
- Eligibility: Product or business type not supported
- Other: Sanctions, creditor or legal action
Find your reason
To find your reason, read the notice in your Shopify admin, and the email sent to the store owner. Check spam too. Not sure who the owner is? Go to Settings, then Users and permissions, and look under Store owner.
- Admin: Read the hold notification
- Email: Sent to the store owner; check spam
- Owner: Settings → Users and permissions
Answer the request
Then do what it asks. Provide the requested information, and reply directly to Shopify's email. Shopify calls that the fastest route. If a payout failed because of your bank, go to the Payouts page, update the bank account, and reactivate payouts once it's fixed.
- Information: Reply directly to Shopify's email
- Bank: Payouts page → Update bank account

Hold or reserve?
A reserve is different. Shopify holds part, or sometimes all, of your funds for a set time, to cover possible chargebacks and refunds. Reserves are more likely with high chargeback or refund rates, long delivery times, or sudden volume spikes. You'll see reserved funds under Finance, then Payouts.
- Reserve: Part of your funds held for a set time
- Why: Chargeback and refund risk
- Triggers: High dispute rates, slow delivery, spikes
- Where: Finance → Payouts
Lower the risk of another
To lower the chance of it coming back, keep business and bank details current, and answer verification emails quickly. Ship on time, describe products accurately, and keep refunds and chargebacks low. If a reserve email lists conditions, meeting them removes it automatically.
- ✅ Business and bank details current
- ✅ Answer verification emails fast
- ✅ Ship on time, describe accurately
- ✅ Keep chargebacks and refunds low
Doing this at scale
RiskClarity can't release a payout. Only Shopify decides that. Where it helps is chargebacks, which are one reason Shopify places reserves. It reviews each paid order, explains the fraud risk in plain English, and recommends allow, verify, or hold, so fewer fraudulent orders ship. See RiskClarity.
