An Inventory Planner alternative for smaller Shopify catalogs: StockSense compared
Inventory Planner by Sage is one of the longest-running inventory forecasting apps on the Shopify App Store. Its listing shows a January 2013 launch, and its website says more than 2,600 brands use it. If you run one Shopify store and mostly want to know what to reorder, how much and when, you may want something smaller with a published price. This page compares it fairly with StockSense.
What Inventory Planner does that StockSense does not
Start with the gaps, because they matter. According to its Shopify listing and website, Inventory Planner offers:
- Multi-channel and multi-location planning, with integrations including Amazon, WooCommerce, eBay, BigCommerce, Cin7, Linnworks, QuickBooks, NetSuite and ShipBob.
- Warehouse and store transfers.
- Open-to-buy planning against forecasted sales or targets, including for new SKUs.
- Financial reporting: cash flow planning, inventory turnover tracking and SKU-level profitability analysis.
- Guided onboarding: expert-supported implementation, 24/7 support and a dedicated point of contact.
StockSense's listing does not list any of these. It is also a new app: it launched in July 2026 and has no reviews yet, while Inventory Planner has 155 reviews and a 4.3 rating on the Shopify App Store as of October 2026.
What StockSense does
StockSense does one job for a Shopify store:
- Per-SKU demand forecasts built from your order history, using velocity, trend and seasonality.
- A reorder point, quantity and date for each SKU, with safety stock that accounts for supplier lead time.
- SKUs ranked by revenue at risk, so you see which stockouts or overstocks cost the most first.
- Drafted purchase orders grouped by supplier.
- A plain-English restock plan. The forecast math runs in code, and AI writes the summary.

When Inventory Planner is the better choice
Choose Inventory Planner if any of these describe you:
- You sell on Amazon, a marketplace or a second storefront as well as Shopify, and need one forecast across all of them.
- You hold stock in several warehouses or retail stores and need transfer recommendations.
- You plan purchasing against a budget and want open-to-buy and cash flow reporting.
- You want a team to implement the tool with you and an account manager to call.
- You want a long track record and reviews you can read before you commit.
Choose StockSense if you sell through one Shopify store, your catalog fits within 10,000 SKUs, and you want a reorder list and drafted purchase orders without a sales call or an implementation project.
