Google Merchant Center shows "Limited performance due to missing value: brand [brand]" when a product is sent without a brand. The product is not removed, but Google files it under limited performance. This guide covers what the issue means, why it happens on Shopify stores, and how to fix it without inventing values.
What the issue means
Brand is one of the identifiers Google uses to work out which product you sell. Google's data quality help page says you need a brand value for all new products except movies, books and musical recordings. Its brand attribute page adds that brand is required for products with a clearly associated brand or manufacturer, including homemade and custom-made goods where you are the manufacturer.
- Issue: Limited performance due to missing value: brand [brand]
- Effect: Limited performance, not a disapproval
- Format: 1 to 70 characters, in only one language or alphabet
Common causes
On Shopify, the brand Google receives comes from the product's Vendor field. Google's help page tells Shopify merchants to add the brand to the Vendor field under Organization. When that field is empty, or filled with something that is not a brand, the issue appears.
- Empty Vendor: Products imported from a spreadsheet or supplier file without a vendor column
- Placeholder values: Google says not to submit N/A, Generic, No brand or Does not exist
- Wrong data in Vendor: A supplier code or warehouse name instead of the brand shoppers recognize
Find the affected products
In Merchant Center, open Products and go to the Needs attention tab, then filter by the issue name. For a long list, download the affected products as a .csv file and sort it by vendor in your own spreadsheet. On the Shopify side, sorting or filtering the product list by vendor quickly shows blank and placeholder values.
Fix it in Shopify
Open each affected product, find the Organization section and enter the brand in Vendor, then save. The Google & YouTube channel syncs the change to Merchant Center. Pick the right value using Google's rules.
| Product | Brand to use |
|---|---|
| Made by a known manufacturer | That manufacturer's brand |
| Made by you, or private label | Your store name |
| No brand at all | The manufacturer or supplier name |
| Compatible part or accessory | The brand of whoever built it, not the brand it fits |
Google's brand page also says that if you are the manufacturer and only seller, use your store name and add an MPN of your own choosing. See GTIN, MPN and brand explained for how the three identifiers work together.
Prevent it coming back
Most missing brands come from new products added in bulk. Make Vendor a required column in any import template and check it before products are published.
- ✅ A real brand, store name or supplier name in Vendor
- ✅ One consistent spelling per brand across the catalog
- ❌ Placeholders such as N/A or Generic
- ❌ A guessed brand. Google says only provide a brand you are sure is correct
Doing this at scale
FeedFix checks every product against Google Merchant Center and Meta Catalog rules and scores each one from 0 to 100 per channel, so you can see which products have data problems. It also drafts compliant title and description rewrites you review as before/after diffs, apply in bulk, and every change is audit-logged. See FeedFix.
