How to Fix "Uncategorized" Products in Shopify

If products in your Shopify admin show as "Uncategorized", they have no value in the Category field. This guide explains how products end up that way, what an empty category costs you, and how to assign one.

Why products end up uncategorized

Shopify's help center is direct about the cause: if a category is not assigned, the product saves as uncategorized. There are three common routes to that state.

A filled product type does not count. Product type is your own free-text label, and the Category field is separate.

What an empty category affects

The category does more than label the product. Shopify lists four uses: unlocking category metafields, organizing products, supporting sales on channels, and determining tax rates with Shopify Tax.

AreaEffect of no category
Category metafieldsAttributes such as color and material are not offered for the product
Shopify TaxShopify Tax uses the category to set the tax rate
Sales channelsChannels that need standardized categories have less to work with
CollectionsSmart collection conditions on product category cannot match it

Fix one product

For a handful of products, fix them from the product page. From your Shopify admin, go to Products and click the product. In the Category section, enter the category and select the most accurate result, or click through the categories and subcategories. Click Save.

Fix many products

For larger numbers, use the bulk editor. Select the products in your product list and click Bulk edit. If the Product category column is not showing, click Columns and select Product category. Set the category in that column for each product, then click Save.

Stop it happening again

Add the category before products are created, not after.

Once a category is set, fill in the category metafields that appear with it. For background on the field, see Shopify product categories and taxonomy.

Doing this at scale

TaxonomyForge scans your catalog for missing categories, along with blank or generic product types and empty attributes. For each product it proposes a Shopify Standard Product Taxonomy category with a confidence score, and you approve each change one by one or in bulk, with every change audit-logged. See TaxonomyForge.
