You expected size, color or material fields under a Shopify product, but there's no Category metafields section. Or the fields are filled in the admin but nothing appears on your product page or in your storefront filters. Shopify's help center says category metafields "display in the Category metafields section with the category name, if they're available." This guide covers why they go missing in each place and how to fix it.
What it means
Category metafields are tied to Shopify's Standard Product Taxonomy, where they're called product attributes. They only exist for a product once it has a standard category, and showing them to shoppers is a separate step from filling them in.
- Admin: The section appears once a category with attributes is assigned
- Product page: Your theme has to display them
- Filters: The Search & Discovery app has to use them, and your theme has to support filters
Common causes
Each place has its own usual cause.
- No category: The product is uncategorized, or a suggested category was never accepted
- Suggested, not added: Shopify adds some category metafields by default and only suggests others, which you choose to add
- Theme not connected: Values exist, but no section or block on the product template is connected to them
- No filter set up: The filter was never added in Search & Discovery
- Theme doesn't support filters: Shopify says filters are created but won't be displayed to customers
- Indexing delay: New values can take time to appear in filters
Find affected products
Start in the admin, then check the storefront.
- Uncategorized products: Shopify labels products without a category as uncategorized, so look for that label
- Empty fields: Open a product and check the Category metafields section for blank values
- Filters: Go to Apps, then Search & Discovery, then Filters, and check which sources are in use
Fix it step by step
Work from the product outward.
- Step 1: Assign a standard category to the product, or accept Shopify's suggestion
- Step 2: In the Category metafields section, click each field and select an entry, or add any suggested fields you need
- Step 3: For the product page, open the theme editor, select a section or block on the product template and click the connect dynamic source icon. Shopify allows up to 20 metafields per template this way
- Step 4: For filters, go to Apps, then Search & Discovery, then Filters, click Add filter, choose the category metafield in the Source field and click Save
- Step 5: If new values don't show in filters, Shopify says to wait 24 to 48 hours for re-indexing, or make a small product edit
- Step 6: If your theme doesn't support metafields or filters, check its documentation or contact the developer
Prevent it
Most gaps come from products added without a category.
- ✅ Assign a category when you create each product
- ✅ Fill category metafields before you build filters on them
- ✅ Recheck filters after switching themes
- ❌ Don't keep old option filters after moving options to category metafields. Shopify says to replace them with category metafield filters

Doing this at scale
TaxonomyForge scans your catalog for missing categories and empty attributes. It proposes a Shopify Standard Product Taxonomy category with a confidence score and attribute metafields (material, color, style, occasion) drawn from your own copy, and you approve each change one by one or in bulk. See TaxonomyForge.
