Products that come in sizes or colors are sent to Google as separate items tied together by an item group ID. When that grouping is wrong, Merchant Center shows issues such as "Missing attribute value for grouped variants" or "Duplicate variant". This guide explains what item group ID does, what causes these issues and how to fix them.
What item group ID does
Each variant is its own product in Merchant Center with its own ID. The item_group_id attribute tells Google which ones belong together. Google says it is required for variants in free listings, and for variants in Shopping ads targeting Brazil, France, Germany, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States.
- Same across variants: item_group_id
- Different per variant: id, plus the attribute that sets it apart, such as size or color
- Format: 1 to 50 characters. Google recommends the parent SKU
What the issues mean
Both issues come from variants that share a group ID but cannot be told apart. Google's help pages describe them this way.
| Issue | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Missing attribute value for grouped variants | Products in one group do not all include the same variant attributes |
| Duplicate variant | Products in one group have no different value for any variant attribute |
Google warns that duplicate variants could lead to the same offer showing more than once.
Common causes on Shopify
In Shopify, sizes and colors are set up as variants of one product. Shopify's help says variant options need to be in English to sync with Google. Problems usually start when the data that distinguishes variants is missing or identical.
- Options not in English: Variants may not sync correctly
- Same value everywhere: Two variants both sent as color "Blue"
- Unrelated products grouped: Google says not to group items that are not true variants, such as a jacket and matching trousers
- Parent sent as a product: Google says not to submit the parent SKU as its own product
Find the affected products
In Merchant Center, open Products, go to the Needs attention tab and filter by the issue name. Then look at every product that shares the flagged item group ID, not just the one listed, because the problem is how they differ from each other.
Fix the group
Google gives two routes for both issues. Either give each product in the group its own value for a variant attribute, such as size or color, or remove the item group ID from products that are not really variants. For one product, open it from the Needs attention tab, choose Edit product, make the change and save. For many, download the .csv list, correct your data and upload it again.
- ✅ A unique size, color or other option value for each variant
- ✅ A landing page where shoppers can choose between the variants
- ✅ A stable group ID that does not change
- ❌ Two variants with identical option values
- ❌ Letter case as the only difference, as Google treats abc123 and ABC123 as the same
