Before Google will show your products, your store's domain has to be verified and claimed in the Merchant Center account connected to Shopify. When that fails, Merchant Center shows "Online store URL not verified", or the Google & YouTube channel reports that it cannot automatically verify your domain. This guide explains why it happens and how to fix it.
What the issue means
Shopify's help says your domain must be verified and claimed in your connected Merchant Center account, and that the Google & YouTube channel normally claims it automatically. Google adds a key rule: a single URL can only be claimed by one account.
- Verify: Prove you control the domain
- Claim: Attach the domain to one Merchant Center account
- Blocker: Another account already holds the claim, or verification never completed
Common causes
These are the causes from Google's help page most likely on a Shopify store.
- Claimed elsewhere: An old, duplicate or agency-created Merchant Center account holds the domain
- Higher-level domain claimed: Another account holds example.com, which blocks www.example.com
- Wrong account connected: The channel points at a different Merchant Center ID than you think
- Missing access: The email in the channel lacks admin access to the Merchant Center account
- Tag removed: A verification tag was deleted or changed, for example during a theme switch
Find where the claim sits
Start in Shopify. In the Google & YouTube channel, check which Merchant Center account is connected and that its email has Admin access. Shopify's help says to confirm in Merchant Center that your primary domain is added, not a subdomain. Google suggests checking Google Search Console for other owners of your property.
Fix it
Pick the route that matches what you found. Shopify warns that transferring a claim cannot be undone.
| Situation | Fix |
|---|---|
| Another account holds the claim and you want to use the connected one | Click Transfer my domain in the Google & YouTube channel |
| You want to keep the account that holds the claim | Click Disconnect beside the current account, then pick the correct one |
| Domain not verified at all | Use the HTML tag method, then click Verify website |
| A www version is blocked | Claim the higher-level domain, such as example.com |
For the HTML tag, Shopify's help says to paste it directly below the opening head tag in theme.liquid and save. Transferring a claim removes it from the original account, and Shopify says feeds there that link to your domain are disapproved.
After the fix
If the domain now shows as verified and claimed but the channel still shows the error, Shopify suggests disconnecting and reconnecting the Merchant Center account. Google says that if you are still stuck, try removing all verification methods and adding them again.
- ✅ One Merchant Center account per store domain
- ✅ Keep the verification tag when you change themes
- ❌ Creating a new Merchant Center account to get around a claim
- ❌ Connecting a multi-client account, which Shopify says cannot connect directly
If the claim is fixed but products still do not appear, see why products are not syncing.
Doing this at scale
FeedFix checks every product against Google Merchant Center and Meta Catalog rules and scores each one from 0 to 100 per channel, so you can see which products have data problems. It drafts compliant title and description rewrites you review as before/after diffs and apply in bulk, with every change audit-logged. See FeedFix.
