How to Handle Gift Returns in Your Online Store

A gift return is awkward because the person holding the item is not the person who paid for it. The recipient may not have the order number, and the buyer may not want to be told the gift came back. This guide covers how to identify a gift order, what to offer the recipient, and what to write into your policy.

Why gift returns are different

In a normal return, the customer, the payer and the person with the item are the same. With a gift, they are split. That changes who can ask for the return, where the money goes and who gets the emails.

Finding the order

You need to match the request to a real order before agreeing to anything. Ask for whatever the recipient has and work from there.

What to offer the recipient

When you refund an order in Shopify you can refund to the original payment method, to store credit, or to both. A refund to the original payment method goes back to the buyer, which is rarely what a gift recipient wants. An exchange or credit usually suits them better.

See refund, exchange or store credit for how the three compare.

Protect the buyer's privacy

The recipient is not your customer on that order. Share only what they need to complete the return.

Watch for abuse

Most gift returns are genuine, but "it was a gift" is also a way to return an item with no proof of purchase. Keep the same checks you use for any return.

Then add a short gift section to your return policy stating who can request a gift return, what they receive and what proof you need.

Doing this at scale

ReturnSage reads your full return policy plus the order and customer context, then recommends approve, exchange, store credit, deny or escalate, with a confidence score, risk flags and a draft reply. It reads return requests created in Shopify, you decide with one click, and every decision is logged. See ReturnSage.
