Shopify Return Request Not Showing: How to Fix It

By Chad Norris, Founder, Orbitloft · Updated October 11, 2026

A customer says there's no option to request a return in their account, or they submitted a request and you can't find it in your admin. Shopify's self-serve returns only show an item as returnable when several settings line up, and requests show up in a specific place. This guide covers both sides: why customers can't request a return, and where submitted requests appear.

How self-serve requests work

Customers sign in to their customer account and request a return for items your return rules allow. You get an email, the order shows a Return requested card, and nothing is approved until you review it. Shopify states that customers can submit requests only for items that are eligible under your rules.

Why customers can't request a return

If the option is missing, one of these is usually the reason.

Why you can't find a request

Requests don't create a separate list. They live on the order.

Fix it step by step

Start with what the customer sees, then your settings.

Prevent it

For setup from scratch, see set up self-serve returns.

Doing this at scale

Once requests are flowing, each one still needs a decision. ReturnSage reads return requests created in Shopify with your full return policy and the order and customer context, then recommends approve, exchange, store credit, deny or escalate with cited policy clauses and a draft reply. It does not create labels or run a returns portal. See ReturnSage.
