You changed a product's type, tag or price, but your automated collection didn't pick it up. Or a product that no longer matches is still in the collection. Shopify's help center covers this under "collection contains incorrect products" and "collection doesn't update when product or variant changes." This guide explains why it happens and the refresh steps Shopify recommends.
What it means
An automated collection, which Shopify calls a smart collection, includes products that match its conditions. When the collection is wrong, either the conditions don't match the product data the way you expect, or the collection hasn't refreshed after a change. Shopify notes that a new collections model is replacing legacy manual and smart collections, so your screens may differ.
Common causes
Check the data and the rules before assuming a sync problem.
- Match all vs any: With all conditions, a product must meet every one
- Exact values: Product type and tag values must match what the condition expects
- Special characters: Shopify says special characters in tags are either ignored or treated as the same
- Variant conditions: For variant-based conditions, a product matches if any variant matches
- Manual additions: Shopify says conditions don't remove products you added by hand
- Exclusions: Product exclusions always override manual or automatic inclusions
- Not published: A collection only appears in the sales channels you publish it to
Find the affected products
Compare what should be in the collection with what is.
- Collection page: Go to Products, then Collections, open the collection and review its products and conditions
- Product list: Filter Products by the same type, tag or vendor used in the condition
- Storefront: Check the live collection page as well as the admin
Fix it step by step
Fix the data first, then use Shopify's refresh workarounds.
- Step 1: Correct the product type, tag or other value so it matches the condition exactly
- Step 2: Refresh the whole collection: copy an existing condition so there are two identical ones, save, delete the duplicate and save again
- Step 3: For one product, make a minor edit, such as adding a space to the description, save, undo it and save again
- Step 4: For variant changes, make a temporary change to any condition, such as adjusting a price value by one cent, save, restore it and save again
- Step 5: Remove manually added products that shouldn't be there
- Step 6: Check both the admin and the storefront
Prevent it
Clean, consistent product data keeps collections accurate.
- ✅ Use one spelling per product type
- ✅ Keep tags simple, without special characters
- ✅ Recheck the collection after bulk edits or imports
- ❌ Don't mix manual additions into automated collections
- ❌ Don't go past 60 conditions. Shopify sets that as the maximum per collection
