A customer tells you they saw a message like "not enough items available", or the cart quietly dropped their quantity to a lower number, or checkout stopped them with an out of stock error. These messages come from Shopify checking the cart against your inventory. This guide explains what the error means, what causes it, how to find the affected products and how to fix it.
What the error means
Shopify's checkout documentation says that when a customer completes any step of the checkout, their cart is checked against your store's inventory levels. If the inventory has become unavailable, an error message is shown. The exact wording depends on your theme and where the check happens, but the meaning is the same: the customer asked for more units than Shopify can sell them.
- Checked: At each step of checkout
- Held: Only when the customer submits payment information
- Released: If payment fails, until the customer reaches the payment step again
Common causes
Most cases come down to Available being lower than the customer expects. Remember that Available, not On hand, is what Shopify sells from.
- Real low stock: Someone else bought the last units while the cart sat open
- Committed units: Stock tied up in unfulfilled orders, reserved draft orders or transfers marked ready to ship
- Wrong location: Shopify states that if the location that fulfills online orders is at zero or below, the item shows as out of stock online even when another location has stock
- Unavailable units: Stock marked damaged, in quality control or held as safety stock
See Shopify inventory states explained for how these numbers relate.
Find the affected products
Start with the product the customer named, then look for others in the same situation.
- Inventory page: Products, then Inventory, and compare Available with On hand for each location
- Adjustment history: Open the product and click View adjustment history to see recent changes
- Location check: Confirm which locations fulfill online orders and whether they hold the stock
- Committed check: If Committed is high, find the unfulfilled orders, reserved drafts or ready-to-ship transfers holding it
Fix it step by step
Fix the number Shopify is reading, then let the customer try again.
- Correct the count: Recount and set the right Available quantity at the right location
- Move stock: Transfer units to a location that fulfills online orders
- Release held units: Fulfill, cancel or close the orders, drafts and transfers holding stock
- Allow backorders on purpose: If you can restock quickly, turn on Continue selling when out of stock for that variant, which needs Inventory tracked turned on
- Reply to the customer: Tell them the item is back, or offer an alternative
Prevent it
The error protects you from selling stock you don't have. The goal is to make sure it only fires when stock is really gone.
- ✅ Keep online-fulfilling locations stocked first
- ✅ Mark orders fulfilled as soon as they ship
- ✅ Recount fast sellers before promotions
- ❌ Don't turn on Continue selling when out of stock as a quick fix for a counting problem
Doing this at scale
Checkout errors on popular items usually mean stock ran low before anyone noticed. StockSense forecasts per-SKU demand with lead-time-aware safety stock, recommends a reorder point, quantity and date, and ranks SKUs by revenue at risk. See StockSense.
