Many online card orders on Shopify get a fraud risk level: low, medium, or high. Here's what each one means, where to find it, and what Shopify recommends you do.
Find the risk level
Open an order and look at the Order risk section. Medium and high risk orders also get a warning icon in your orders list, so you can spot them before you fulfill.
- Order page: The Order risk section
- Orders list: Warning icon on medium and high risk
Three levels, three suggestions
Low risk means Shopify suggests you can fulfill the order. Medium means confirm with the customer before fulfilling. High means consider canceling the order.
| Level | Shopify's suggestion |
|---|---|
| Low | “You can fulfill this order” |
| Medium | “Confirm with the customer before fulfilling” |
| High | “Consider canceling this order” |
What it checks
The indicators include address verification, the card security code check, whether the customer's location matches the payment method, unusual device or network activity, and whether more than one card was used.
- AVS: Address verification
- CVV: Card security code
- Location: Matches the payment method?
- Cards: More than one card used?
Know the limits
Recommendations depend on your plan, and some orders, like point of sale or gift card orders, don't get one. And medium risk still leaves the decision to you, which is where most of the money is lost.
- Plan: Recommendations depend on your plan
- Orders: POS, gift card and some others: no rating
- Medium: Still your call
