Returns apps for Shopify mostly do one of two jobs: they run the return itself (portal, labels, refunds), or they help you decide what to do with each request. This guide covers what to look for, Shopify's built-in self-serve returns, and five apps to consider. We make ReturnSage, which is one of the apps below.
What to look for
List what slows you down today, then check each listing against it.
- Portal and labels: Whether customers can start a return themselves and receive a label without emailing you.
- Exchanges and store credit: Whether the tool can offer an exchange or credit in place of a refund.
- Rules and decisions: How requests are approved. Simple rules cover clear cases. Gray-area requests still need a judgment.
- Pricing model: Many returns apps include a number of returns per month and charge for each extra one.
Apps to consider
Prices are as shown on each Shopify App Store listing as of October 2026. Confirm current pricing on each listing before you install.
| App | What it does and who it suits |
|---|---|
| Shopify self-serve returns (built in) | Customers request returns from their account, you approve or decline in the admin. Suits stores with a modest number of returns. |
| ReturnSage | Recommends an outcome for each return request with your policy cited. Suits stores that spend time deciding gray-area requests. |
| Loop Returns & Exchanges | Returns portal, labels, exchanges and workflows. Suits brands that want to push exchanges. |
| AfterShip Returns & Exchanges | Branded returns page, labels, rules and automated approvals. Suits stores that want a portal at a lower entry price. |
| ReturnGO Returns & Exchanges | Portal, exchanges, store credit, labels and automation. Suits stores with higher return counts and integrations. |
| Return Prime | Portal, auto-approve rules, exchanges and store credit. Suits growing stores that want to pay per request. |
Shopify self-serve returns is included with Shopify. Customers submit a return request, and you approve or decline it, then send shipping instructions or a label. Limitation: Shopify's help center says it does not work with legacy customer accounts, and customers cannot request an exchange. See how to set it up.
ReturnSage reads your return policy plus the order and customer context, then recommends approve, exchange, store credit, deny or escalate, with a confidence score, cited policy clauses and a draft reply. You decide with one click. Plans are Starter at $49, Growth at $149 and Scale at $399 per month, each with a 14-day free trial. Limitation: it is the decision layer and nothing more. It reads return requests created in Shopify and does not create labels or run a returns portal.
Loop Returns & Exchanges lists a self-serve portal, return labels, exchange incentives such as bonus credit, and workflows. The listing shows a Free plan, Essential at $155 per month and Advanced at $340 per month. Limitation: features such as instant exchange and bonus credit are listed under the Advanced plan.
AfterShip Returns & Exchanges lists a branded returns page, labels, eligibility rules and automatic approval. The listing shows a Free plan, Essentials at $19 per month with 20 returns included, and Premium at $119 per month with 100 included, with a 7-day free trial on paid plans. Limitation: returns above the included number are charged per return.
ReturnGO Returns & Exchanges lists a branded portal, product and variant exchanges, store credit, labels and auto approval. The listing shows Premium at $147 per month with 110 returns included and Pro at $297 per month with 300 included, each with a 14-day free trial. Limitation: the listing shows no free plan.
Return Prime lists a branded portal, rules that approve or reject requests, exchanges and store credit. The listing shows a Start plan that is free to install with 5 free requests, Grow at $19.99, Thrive AI at $79.99 and Scale at $149.99 per month, with a 15-day free trial on paid plans. Limitation: requests above each plan's allowance are charged per request.
How to choose
Match the tool to the part of returns that costs you time or money.
- A handful of returns a month: Shopify's self-serve returns is likely enough, with a clear return policy.
- You need a branded portal, labels and exchanges: A portal app such as Loop, AfterShip, ReturnGO or Return Prime. Compare the returns included per month with your own volume.
- The portal works but deciding takes too long: ReturnSage, used with Shopify's built-in returns.
Doing this at scale
ReturnSage reads your full return policy plus the order and customer context, recommends an outcome with cited policy clauses, risk flags and a draft reply, and logs every decision. It does not create labels or run a returns portal. See ReturnSage.
