You do not need a full redesign to find what is wrong with a product page. Ten minutes and a phone will show you most of the problems. This guide splits the audit into five two-minute checks you can run on any product.
Minutes 0 to 2: the top of the page
Open the page on your phone, not your desktop, and do not scroll. Look at what a new visitor sees before doing anything.
- Title: Does it say what the product is in plain words?
- Price: Is it visible, with any discount shown clearly?
- Main image: Can you tell what the product is at a glance?
- Buy button: Can you find it without hunting?
Minutes 2 to 4: the images
Swipe through the gallery without reading any text. The images should answer the questions a shopper would settle by holding the product.
- ✅ More than one angle
- ✅ Something that shows scale
- ✅ A close-up of material or finish
- ✅ The product in use
- ❌ Near-duplicate shots, or images that are blurry when zoomed
Minutes 4 to 6: the copy
Scan the description the way a shopper would, in a few seconds. Then read it properly and mark anything vague. For a fuller method, see how to write product descriptions that sell.
- Scannability: Are there bullets or short paragraphs, or one block of text?
- Benefits: Does the copy say what the buyer gets, or does it list features and stop?
- Specs: Are size, materials, compatibility and what is included easy to find?
- Claims: Is every claim something you can back up?
Minutes 6 to 8: trust and urgency
A shopper who likes the product still needs a reason to trust the store. Check that the reassurance is on the page and that any pressure is honest.
| Check | Pass looks like |
|---|---|
| Shipping | Cost and delivery time stated on the page or one tap away |
| Returns | Policy linked near the buy button |
| Reviews | Real reviews shown, including the less flattering ones |
| Urgency | Stock or deadline messages that are true |
Minutes 8 to 10: the path to checkout
Finish by acting like a buyer. Pick a variant, add to cart and go as far as the checkout page.
- Variants: Does each option show the right image and price?
- Sold-out options: Are they clearly marked?
- Add to cart: Does it confirm that the item was added?
- Surprises: Does any cost appear in the cart that the product page did not mention?
Note the three biggest problems you found and fix those before you audit the next page. For a longer list, see the Shopify product page checklist.
Doing this at scale
Ten minutes a page is fine for your top sellers, but not for a whole catalog. ConvertLens scores every product page 0 to 100 against a conversion rulebook covering title clarity, scannability, benefit vs feature balance, images and alt text, specs, trust and urgency. AI drafts before/after rewrites of weak sections from the page's own copy, and you approve each change. See ConvertLens.
