Fraud tools for Shopify do different jobs: some score orders, some take on the chargeback cost, and some help you fight disputes after they land. This guide covers what to look for, the built-in Shopify features, and four apps to consider. We make RiskClarity, which is one of the apps below.
What to look for
Check these points on each listing.
- Decision or guarantee: Some tools advise and leave the call to you. Others approve or decline orders for you and cover fraud chargebacks on orders they approve.
- Which orders are covered: Check payment methods, order types and countries. Shopify's own recommendations apply to eligible online credit card orders.
- Explanation: A risk level alone is hard to act on. Look for the signals behind it.
- Pricing model: Flat monthly fee, a per-order fee, a share of recovered chargebacks, or pricing quoted outside Shopify.
- Records: A log of what you decided and why is useful evidence in a dispute.
Apps to consider
Prices are as shown on each Shopify App Store listing as of October 2026. Confirm current pricing on each listing before you install.
| App | What it does and who it suits |
|---|---|
| Shopify fraud analysis (built in) | Fraud indicators and a low, medium or high recommendation on eligible orders. Suits every store as a starting point. |
| Shopify Protect (built in) | Free chargeback protection on eligible Shop Pay orders. Suits stores with a large share of Shop Pay orders. |
| RiskClarity | Explains the risk on each paid order and recommends allow, verify or hold. Suits stores that review orders themselves. |
| Signifyd | Automated approve or decline decisions with a financial guarantee. Suits stores that want to hand off the decision. |
| ClearSale Fraud Protection | AI and human order review with a chargeback guarantee. Suits stores that want reviewed decisions and coverage. |
| Chargeflow | Automates chargeback responses and dispute alerts. Suits stores that already receive disputes. |
Shopify fraud analysis is included with Shopify. Shopify's help center says fraud indicators are available on the Basic plan or higher, and recommendations on the Grow plan or higher or on any store using Shopify Payments. Limitation: recommendations are not given for order types such as POS, B2B and subscription renewals. See what Shopify's order risk levels mean.
Shopify Protect is described by Shopify as free chargeback protection for eligible Shop Pay orders, covering fraudulent and unrecognized chargebacks. Limitation: it does not apply to orders paid another way, or to other chargeback reasons.
RiskClarity reviews each paid order, explains the risk in plain English with the fraud signals behind it, and recommends allow, verify or hold. You decide with one click. Plans are Starter at $49, Growth at $149 and Scale at $399 per month, each with a 14-day free trial. Limitation: it explains and recommends, and it does not offer a chargeback guarantee, so a fraud chargeback on an order you allowed is still your cost.
Signifyd lists real-time approve or decline decisions at checkout and a financial guarantee against fraud and non-fraud chargebacks. The listing says it is free to install, with charges that may apply after a 14-day free trial and may be billed by Signifyd outside your Shopify invoice. Limitation: the listing does not show prices, so you need a quote to compare costs.
ClearSale Fraud Protection lists AI and human review of every order, plus a chargeback guarantee on fraud for orders it approves. The listing says it is free to install and that charges may be billed by ClearSale separately. Limitation: prices are not on the listing, so check the pricing page it links to.
Chargeflow lists automated evidence submission for chargebacks and real-time dispute alerts. The listing shows a fee of 25% of recovered chargebacks, a Prevent feature with 1,000 free orders then $0.20 per order, and alerts charged per prevented chargeback. Limitation: its main job starts once a dispute exists, so it complements order review instead of replacing it.
How to choose
Match the tool to where your losses come from.
- Few risky orders: Shopify's fraud analysis may be enough. Read the recommendation and the indicators before you fulfill.
- Mostly Shop Pay orders: Check whether Shopify Protect already covers them before paying for anything else.
- You want to keep the decision, with reasons and a record: RiskClarity.
- You want someone else to carry the fraud chargeback cost: A guarantee app such as Signifyd or ClearSale.
- Disputes are the main cost: Chargeflow, alongside a clear response process.
Doing this at scale
RiskClarity reviews each paid order, explains the risk in plain English, recommends allow, verify or hold, and logs every decision in an audit log you can export for chargeback disputes. See RiskClarity.
