A customer asks you to swap a size or add an item, you open the order, and there's no Edit button, or Shopify won't let you change the item you need. Shopify blocks edits on certain orders and certain items, and the fix depends on which rule applies. This guide covers why an order can't be edited, how to tell which reason applies and what to do instead.
What "can't edit" means
Shopify's order editing guide says you can edit orders after they're placed to make adjustments before fulfillment. Its considerations page lists orders that can't be edited at all, plus changes that aren't allowed even on editable orders.
- Editable: Unfulfilled orders created in your store, with the right permission
- Blocked: Specific order types and fulfilled items
- Permission: Shopify states you need to be the store owner or have the Edit orders permission
Orders Shopify won't let you edit
These come from Shopify's considerations for editing orders.
- ❌ Orders imported into your Shopify admin, which only the app that created them can edit
- ❌ Orders paid with Shop Pay Installments
- ❌ Orders with local delivery as the delivery method
- ❌ Fulfilled items: they can't be removed or have their quantity changed (unfulfilled items on the same order can still be edited)
- ❌ Orders with duties and taxes charged, such as DDP orders, once any line item is fulfilled
Shopify also notes that orders with a pending payment status may not allow edits to items or discounts, and that editing orders in other currencies is only available to some stores.
Changes you can't make
Even on an editable order, some fields are fixed.
- Order-level discounts: Can't be added, removed or updated
- Discount codes and automatic discounts: Can't be edited on line items
- Delivery method: Can't be switched, for example from shipping to pickup
- Shipping rates: Aren't recalculated when you edit
- Bundles: Can't be added during an edit
Find which rule applies
Check the order against the list above before trying anything else.
- Payment: Look for Shop Pay Installments or Payment pending
- Fulfillment: Check whether any line is already fulfilled
- Delivery: Check whether it's local delivery
- Source: Check whether an app or import created the order
- Your account: Ask the store owner whether you have Edit orders
Fix it step by step
When editing is blocked, Shopify's documented workaround is to start fresh.
- Shop Pay Installments: Refund the original order and create a new order for the customer
- Other currencies: Refund the order, create a draft order in the right market, and email the invoice in the customer's currency
- Fulfilled item swap: Treat it as a return or exchange instead of an edit
- Missing permission: Ask the store owner to grant Edit orders

Prevent it
- ✅ Handle change requests before the order is fulfilled
- ✅ Tell customers how quickly to contact you about changes
- ❌ Don't promise an edit before checking the payment method
Doing this at scale
Edit requests are time-sensitive because the window closes at fulfillment. Reclaim triages each support ticket by intent, sentiment and urgency and drafts a reply grounded in the real order, tracking and refund history. Today it builds its queue from recent orders and does not connect to a helpdesk or inbox. See Reclaim.
