Wholesale MOQ Calculator: Set a Minimum Order Quantity

Enter your unit economics and what processing a wholesale order costs you regardless of size. The calculator finds the minimum order quantity where an order clears your fixed costs and earns your target profit.

Minimum order quantity

39 units

$8.00 margin per unit (50.0%). 8 units just cover the fixed cost; the rest is your target profit.

Order value at that MOQ

$624

Round up to a case quantity your warehouse already packs. If the number looks too high to quote, raise the wholesale price before you lower the target.

Why MOQs exist

Every wholesale order carries fixed work — processing, boxing, paperwork, often freight and payment-terms risk — that a tiny order can't cover. The MOQ is the point where per-unit margin × units clears that fixed cost plus the profit that makes the order worth your attention.

Setting it in practice

Compute the break-even units, add your target profit, then round up to a case quantity you already pack. If the resulting MOQ looks too high to quote, your wholesale price is too low — raise it before shaving the target. Many brands pair a modest opening MOQ with a higher reorder discount tier instead of one big wall.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a minimum order quantity?

MOQ = (fixed cost per order + target profit per order) ÷ margin per unit. If an order costs you $60 to process, you want $250 of profit, and you make $8 per unit wholesale, the MOQ is 39 — round up to 48 if that's your case pack.

What is a typical MOQ for wholesale?

There's no standard — it's set by your economics, not convention. Small brands often open at a dollar minimum (say $200–$500) instead of units, which adapts automatically across products. Whatever the form, it should trace back to fixed costs and target profit, not to what a competitor does.

Should my MOQ be in units or dollars?

Dollar minimums are simpler for buyers ordering across your catalog and keep every order above your worth-it line; unit MOQs per product protect you on low-margin items and map to case packs. Many brands use both: an order minimum in dollars plus case-pack multiples per SKU.

A retailer wants to order below my MOQ — should I say yes?

Occasionally, deliberately: a first order from a retailer you want can be worth taking at break-even as a paid sample. Say yes with conditions — full price, prepaid, explicit that reorders meet the MOQ — so the exception doesn't become the account's standing terms.
