Google Merchant Center Custom Labels: Setup and Fixes

By Chad Norris, Founder, Orbitloft · Updated October 11, 2026

You added custom labels to your products, but they do not show up when you build product groups in Google Ads, or some products are missing from the group you expected. Google's help pages say labels past the account limit "won't be taken into account for both reporting and bidding." This guide explains how custom labels work, why they go missing and how to set them up so they stay usable.

What custom labels are for

Custom labels are five attributes, custom_label_0 to custom_label_4, that you define yourself. Google says they let you build filters for Performance Max, Shopping and Demand Gen campaigns, so you can bid on and report by groups such as season, margin or clearance. Shoppers never see them.

Why labels go missing

Google Ads help says new or edited labels can take 24 to 48 hours to appear, and that a label may not sync if you are over or close to the limit.

CauseWhat happens

Find the problem

Open an affected product in Merchant Center and check the label value is there. If it is, count the unique values in that label attribute across the catalog. Per-product values, such as a SKU or exact price in a label, are the usual reason a store hits the limit.

Set labels up properly

Decide what each label means before you fill it in, and keep the list of values short. Google's examples include season, selling rate, price range, margin and release year.

There are two common ways to fill labels without editing every product by hand. Google recommends attribute rules in Merchant Center to assign labels from existing product data. A supplemental data source can also add labels to products already in your primary feed, matched by product ID.

Fix it if you hit the limit

Google's fix is to reduce the number of unique values and resubmit your product data. Before you remove values, check which campaigns and product groups use them, because changing labels changes which products those groups include.

Doing this at scale

FeedFix checks every product against Google Merchant Center and Meta Catalog rules and scores each one from 0 to 100 per channel, so you can see which products have data problems. It drafts compliant title and description rewrites you review as before/after diffs and apply in bulk, with every change audit-logged. See FeedFix.
