An SEO audit of your store reports Duplicate title tags: several pages share the same title. In search results, those pages look identical, and shoppers can't tell which one they want. This guide explains what the warning means, why Shopify stores get it, how to find the pages, how to fix them and how to stop it coming back.
What the warning means
The title tag is the page title that search engines show as the link in results. Google says each page should have distinct text that describes its content, and to avoid repeated or boilerplate text in title elements. When titles don't reflect the page, Google may rewrite the title link using other text on the page.
- Title tag: The link text in search results
- Duplicate: Two or more pages share it
- Google's advice: A distinct title for each page
Common causes on Shopify
When a product's SEO title is left blank, Shopify's product CSV guide says the product's own title is used instead. So products with the same name end up with the same title tag.
- Same name: Separate products for each color, all called the same thing
- Bulk imports: One SEO title pasted across many rows
- Templates: Generic titles such as "New arrival"
- Paged lists: Later pages of a collection that repeat the first page's title, depending on your theme
Find the duplicates
Run a crawl with your SEO audit tool and export the duplicate title list. For products, export your catalog as a CSV and sort by the Title and SEO title columns to spot repeats.
- Crawl: Export the duplicate title report
- CSV: Sort products by Title and SEO title
- Group: Products vs collections vs other pages
Fix it step by step
Give each page a title that says what makes it different. In Shopify, open the product, click the pencil icon in the Search engine listing section and edit the Page title field. Shopify recommends 60 characters or fewer, since most search engines shorten longer titles.
| Duplicate | Distinct |
|---|---|
| Linen Shirt | Linen Shirt, Relaxed Fit, Sage Green |
| Linen Shirt | Linen Shirt, Slim Fit, Navy |
- Products: Add the detail that sets each one apart
- Copies: Combine near-identical products as variants where it makes sense
- Bulk: Edit the SEO title column in a CSV and re-import
- Paged lists: Ask your theme developer about page numbers in titles

Prevent it
Set a naming rule before you add products: product type, then the detail that makes it unique. Check new imports for repeated SEO titles before you publish.
- ✅ Write a distinct title for every product
- ✅ Check imports for repeated SEO titles
- ✅ Use variants for colors and sizes
- ❌ One title pasted across a whole collection
Doing this at scale
ConvertLens improves product page content and does not change indexing, redirects or site speed settings. It scores every product page 0 to 100 against a conversion rulebook, including title clarity, and drafts before/after rewrites of weak sections from the page's own copy for you to approve. Clearer, more specific product titles help each page stand apart. See ConvertLens.
