Crawled, currently not indexed means Google visited a page on your store, but chose not to add it to search results, for now. Here's what causes it and how to fix it.
Seen, but not added
In Search Console's page indexing report, this status means Google crawled the page but didn't index it. Google says it may or may not be indexed in the future, and there's no need to resubmit it for crawling. It's a judgment about the page, not a technical error.
- Status: Crawled, not indexed
- Meaning: Google saw the page, didn't index it
- Future: May or may not be indexed later
- Resubmit: Not needed, says Google
Thin or duplicate content
On Shopify stores, the usual causes are thin or duplicate content. Product pages with a one-line description. Descriptions copied from the supplier, which match many other sites. Near-identical products. Or collection pages with almost nothing on them.
- Thin: One-line product descriptions
- Copied: Supplier text found on other sites
- Similar: Near-identical products
- Empty: Collections with little on them
Find the pages that matter
To find affected pages, open Search Console. Go to Indexing, then Pages, and click the Crawled, currently not indexed row. Look at which kinds of pages are listed. Old or low-value pages may not matter. Your main products do.
1. Search Console → Indexing → Pages
2. Click “Crawled – currently not indexed”
3. Separate key products from leftovers
Give the page something unique
Fix one: make each important page worth indexing. Write an original description, with benefits, real specs, and details only you know. Add useful images with alt text. A page that says something unique has a better chance.
| Thin | Worth indexing |
|---|---|
| Linen tee. Comfortable. High quality. | Pre-washed linen, so it won't shrink. Boxy cut, dropped shoulder. Model is 6 ft 1 in a medium. |
Signal that the page matters
Fix two: show Google the page matters. Link to it from collections and related products. Shopify builds your sitemap automatically. When a page is improved, use the URL Inspection tool and click Request indexing. Google says that can reduce the wait. It isn't a guarantee.
- Links: From collections and related products
- Sitemap: Shopify generates it automatically
- Request: URL Inspection → Request indexing
- Then: Be patient: no guarantees
Publish finished pages
To stop it coming back, don't publish a product until its description is finished. Avoid pasting supplier copy. Leave genuinely low-value pages unindexed, that's fine. And check the report after big catalog changes.
- ✅ Finish the description before publishing
- ✅ Write your own copy, not the supplier's
- ✅ Recheck after big catalog changes
- ❌ Chasing indexing for every leftover page
Doing this at scale
ConvertLens helps with one part of this: the content. It scores each product page, flags thin copy and missing specs, and drafts rewrites from your own copy for you to approve. It doesn't touch indexing, and it can't make Google index a page. Better pages just give you a better chance. See ConvertLens.
