Your Facebook or Instagram shop shows products marked "sold out," or Commerce Manager flags items as "Out of stock" or "Out of stock for too long." Sometimes the opposite happens and an item you've run out of still appears in your ads. This guide explains how Meta treats out-of-stock products, why the data can be wrong and how to fix it from Shopify.
What Meta does with out-of-stock items
Meta treats ads and shops differently. Its help center says out-of-stock products aren't shown in ads, but they still appear in shops on Facebook and Instagram for up to 56 days, marked as sold out.
| Issue in Commerce Manager | What it affects |
|---|---|
| Out of stock | Ads only. The product isn't shown in ads |
| Out of stock for too long | Shops only. After 56 days it no longer appears in your shop |
So a sold-out badge in your shop is expected behavior, not an error.
Why the stock status is wrong
Meta says that if the wrong price or availability shows, it's likely incorrect in your catalog. The catalog only knows what its data source sends.
- Shopify data: If products come from Shopify, the catalog reflects what Shopify sends
- Several sources: A product updated by more than one data source may take values from the wrong one
- Old feed: A data feed that isn't re-uploaded keeps stale availability
- Sync delay: Shopify says product changes usually reach Facebook within a few minutes
Find the affected products
Commerce Manager lets you filter the catalog by issue.
- Step 1: Go to Commerce Manager and select your catalog
- Step 2: Open the Catalog tab and go to Products
- Step 3: Click Filters, then filter by issue
- Step 4: Open a product and check Status and issues
- Step 5: Look below Added by to see which data source owns it
Fix it
Fix the data at its source, not in Meta.
- Item really is in stock: Meta says to change its availability to "in stock." For Shopify products, correct the inventory in Shopify and let it sync
- Discontinued item: Archive it. Meta says archived products aren't shown in your ads or shop
- Remove from every Meta surface: Shopify says making a product unavailable to the channel removes it from shops, ads and all other features
- Data feed: Edit the availability field to "in stock" or "out of stock" and upload the file again
Prevent it
Out-of-stock problems on Meta usually start with inventory problems in Shopify.
- ✅ Track inventory in Shopify for products you sell on Meta
- ✅ Use one data source per catalog where you can
- ✅ Archive products you won't restock
- ❌ Don't fix availability by hand in Commerce Manager when Shopify will overwrite it
For the matching problem on Google, see mismatched availability in Google Merchant Center.
Doing this at scale
FeedFix checks every product against Meta Catalog and Google Merchant Center rules and scores each one 0 to 100 per channel, so you can see which listings have weak or missing data. It drafts compliant rewrites you approve in bulk, and every change is audit-logged. See FeedFix.
